Reasons for the Herp sitters list and how to Volunteer

      We've had a project in process for several months to gather a list of volunteer herp sitters around the U.S. and around the globe. Whether you go on vacation or go to the hospital, it's more difficult to have your herps cared for than the typical household pets.

      Here is the current list of herp sitters. Some are listed under two cities because they split their time between them. Some will expect you to trade sitting, some will ask for a fee, and some will do it just for fun and as a service to the critter(s). Although general preferences stated by the sitter are shown below, a sitter may decline a request at any time, for any reason. All negotiations between the sitter and the herp owner should be worked out privately. The compilers of this list have not interviewed the volunteers nor inspected their premises, so we cannot make any endorsements. A signed agreement was suggested by one volunteer. It's also a good idea to have the name and phone number of the vet that the owner normally uses in case the sitter has a problem.

      Please let me know if I've made any transcription errors, if you change your e-mail address or if you wish to be removed from the list. If you'd like to join the list of possible herp sitters, send an e-mail to me with your name, city, state, country if not US, e-mail address, and phone number (optional). If your browser can handle forms I would prefer that you fill out the volunteer form as this will make it easier for me to get your information on the page faster. :)

      You should indicate the general categories of herps you're willing to care for:

• A = frogs and/or toads or other amphibians
• B = birds (in herp households)
• C = crocodilians such as caimans
• I = iguanas
• L = lizards other than igs, possibly including bearded dragons, geckos, monitors, chameleons and so forth
• M = administer meds and other special care
• R = rodents and other prey items
• S = snakes
• T = turtles and/or tortoises
• W = warm-blooded (e.g., cats, dogs, etc., in herp households)
• O = other (specify)
• Please indicate if you can care for the animals:
• IH = in your own home
• V = by visiting the pet's home
