While older kids might consider chill-inducing reenactments of snake bites and Komodo dragon attacks totally cool, less hormonally charged viewers are likely to be completely creeped out by much of Nightmares of Nature: Deadly Reptiles. Yet there is natural drama in the authentic, if sometimes shocking, footage. A Colombian Indian harvests poison from a frog to make lethal darts, then kills a monkey with his new weapon. Indonesian villagers speak in their native tongue as they relive attacks by a 300-pound lizard, the alligator-like Komodo dragon. A trip to rural Asia reveals a culture that values snakes as protectors of grain, despite potentially deadly snake bites. While the soothing-voiced announcer tries to reassure viewers that reptiles mean to hurt flies, not humans, you'll be hard-pressed to believe it. To educate the under-10 set, and avoid giving them nightmares, turn to the Amazing Animals series instead. --Valerie J. Nelson

Imagine an 18-foot king cobra packing enough venom to kill an adult elephant: even when decapitated its head has been known to bite and kill! -- as a house pet. See how this most regal of snakes lives in relative harmony -- unless you foolishly rile it up -- throughout the Indian Subcontinent and Africa. Watch antivenom being created from regularly milked cobras, snake-bite charmers engaged in a devil dance to save a bite victim and a battle royal pitting a furry marsh mongoose against a furious cobra. Cobra also shows you how the wily reptile forms its menacing hood, is charmed by motion and vibration, not sound, and can accurately shoot crippling venom straight in your eye. Charming, no?

Despite their deserved reputation as fearsome hunters, African crocodiles are surprisingly vulnerable prey. This 50-minute entry into the National Geographic canon chronicles the lives of these 16-foot long, 1-ton beasts that Africans call "the animal that kills while smiling." When not taking down unsuspecting wildebeests come to quench their thirst on the banks of the Grumeti River in Tanzania, the female crocodiles spend a good part of their year nurturing first their eggs and then their young. A mama crocodile may see 80 youngsters into the world each year, but an astonishing 90 percent will fall victim to the very animals their mother would have for dinner: monitor lizards, mongooses, perch. Actor Richard Kiley narrates a year in the life of these progeny of the dinosaurs. Both the cinematography and its subject matter are compelling, whether the "dragons" are using their famously powerful jaws to crush wildlife or tenderly carry their young. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Most commonly thought of as hand-removal machines, alligators are the undisputed top carnivores of America's southern wetlands. National Geographic's Realm of the Alligator takes you deeper than you'd ever want to go in person into the Okefenokee swamp, straddling Florida and Georgia, to explore the private lives of these modern-day dinosaurs. The feeding scenes are awe-inspiring--to see such a large, typically slow-moving animal strike with such speed and ferocity is breathtaking. Reproduction and development are covered in depth, as well, with tiny alligators crawling out of their eggs to begin their carnivorous lives almost immediately. Exciting and informative, National Geographic's Realm of the Alligator lets you get close and still keep all your fingers. --Rob Lightner

From ancient dinosaurs to modern-day turtles to the mystery of the Loch Ness monster, reptiles have been a part of the evolutionary process for more than 350 million years. Reptiles and Amphibians was released in 1989 but appears to be pieced together with even older stock footage. A T. rex fighting looks a bit like a scene from Godzilla. Just the same, this video is still informative and curious. The life cycle of frogs, sea snakes in Australia, as well as an experiment examining how lizards regenerate their tails and if such regeneration could be adapted by man is all thought-provoking. Nearly every continent of the world is touched on, as is the concept of reptiles as gods in some cultures and simultaneously as monsters in others

Science goes "Boing!" when Bill Nye shows up, and this fast-moving instalment of his popular show is no exception. Reptiles & Insects--Leapin' Lizards! uses the Science Guy's trademark wacky sounds and visual effects to get across a wide range of facts about some of our cold-blooded relatives and, as an added bonus, makes science and scientists look cool. We get to see venomous snakes, hissing cockroaches, and angry crocodiles in the safety of the living room. Nye knows that our first response is to say "Yuck!" but he gets past that by asking questions: What do lizards eat? How do bees see? And what's really going on inside that ant farm? You'll find all the answers in Reptiles & Insects--Leapin' Lizards! --Rob Lightner
