Rattlesnakes: Their Habits, Life Histories & Influence on Mankind by Laurence Monroe Klauber

Rattlesnake: Portrait of a Predator by Manny Rubio, William S. Brown
It is also impossible to be neutral about this marvelous new book on rattlesnakes, the only poisonous snakes with the buzzing warning. Lawrence Klauber's monumental Rattlesnakes (1956) is the standard scholarly work on the subject, but Rubio's new semipopular work is a worthy successor, beautifully illustrated with the author's color photographs (which Klauber lacked). Fourteen chapters cover the basics of anatomy, senses, reproduction, fangs, and poison, as well as more esoteric subjects, such as rattlesnake roundups and religious snake-handling, with equal thoroughness and depth. Rubio's captivation with his subject comes through in his writing, but he is able to present the accounts of snake-handling and roundups with dispassion, allowing readers to form their own opinions on these controversial practices. The Guide to Owning Eyelash and Temple Vipers by Ray Hunziker, Raymond E. Hunziker

He also discusses the identification and keeping of many other palm-pitvipers (Bothriechis) and bamboo vipers (Trimeresurus) related to Eyelash and Temples, illustrated with stunning photos. Venomous snakes have a special attraction to some hobbyists, but they are not for all terrarium enthusiasts. The Guide to Owning Lyelash and Temple Vipers lets every snake keeper discover the beauty and interesting natural history of these snakes without taking unnecessary risks. Venomous Reptiles of North America by Carl H. Ernst

Fact files give essential information for every snake. The Encyclopedia of Snakes by Chris Mattison
Mattison opens his large-scale study of snakes (not an encyclopedia of snakes as the title suggests) with the scientific definition of the creature and how it differs from other reptiles. He then moves on to cover their taxonomy, morphology, habitats, diet, reproduction, and protective mechanisms. Especially interesting are the discussions of the snake's relationship with humans in myth and reality. Color photographs illustrate the discussion throughout. A field day for herpetologists and snake-loving readers. The Snake Almanac by Edward R. Ricciuti
A well illustrated, general overview of snakes and human perception of snakes written for a popular audience. Chapters speculate on the evolutionary path resulting in these reptiles, explore their physiology and behavior, their means of reproduction and their normal habitat. The book also delves into the myths surrounding snakes and the truths or falsehoods found in them, including speculations on giant snakes longer than ten meters. Additional chapters provide brief overviews of different snake species from around the world, conservation measures concerning snakes, and how to keep snakes in (as pets) or out (as pests) of the home. Snakes by Peter J. Stafford
Contains information on lifestyle, structure, anatomy, senses, and snake locomotion. Most of the book provides a basic overview of several groups of snake (e.g. elapidae, boas, sunbeam snakes, vipers, etc.). Brief descriptions of each family are provided along with some specific details on a few individual species. The wonderful photos are included throughout the book. The "did you know" type boxes, found in each section, were of particular interest. This book neither intended as a species guide for snake identification nor for regional identification. However, it is well worth the price. Overall, well written & full of interesting facts + excellent photos. Snakes of the World by Chris Mattison
